|My Tulips by Jacquie Woodward|
This post will share several references from medical doctors and researchers but all would be futile were they not set within the truth of scriptural admonishment, “I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you and I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore, CHOOSE LIFE that both you and your descendants may live.” (Deut 30:19) We MUST be aggressive in managing our own health by making good choices. It is also worth noting that life spans in Biblical times were quite long and, of course, nutrition and ecology were relatively simple as were the economy, politics, and “scientific knowledge”. Truth, however, and the author if it have not changed. Psalm 91:16 promises, “With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.” and Jeremiah 30:17 promises “For I will restore health to you and heal you of your wounds.” There is no evidence that we are created to be diseased and sick.
Our choices and our culture are the sources of the diseases we must resist. We have been slowly weaned from God made food to Man made or highly manipulated food. Toxins are added to our environment constantly and it is important to realize, as George Malkmus, D.D. (a colon cancer survivor who used only nutrition for healing) says in The Hallelujah Diet whose website is www.hacres.com, “Remember, anything that is not real food is treated as a toxic poison by the body. Your body will try eliminating it through the lymphatic system. And if it cannot, it will store it somewhere in the body.” We cannot rely on medical care givers to teach us to avoid toxins; it’s our responsibility.
It is important to NOT blindly trust the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) to screen toxins from the food and drug market. Too much “business” is involved–lobbying, politics, and money are so involved that this agency cannot be trusted. Again it is our own responsibility to manage our “health care”. In her surprisingly well researched book, Knockout, Suzanne Somers shares, “When the FDA did an internal audit of itself, its own report stated that it lacks the scientific capability and competence to evaluate new medical technologies. What this means is that the FDA no longer has the scientific legitimacy to be the sole arbitrator of what works and what doesn’t.” Ms Somers provides a website, www.lef.org, which is the “Life Extension Foundation” where you can find a link to the FDA update. I would add that it is worth reading Somer’s book to gain insight into cancer treatment truth. Just the “foreward” with its list of “questions you should ask every pysician you choose to investigate when it comes to your treatment choices for cancer” is worth the price of the book. It also includes many interviews with doctors who are successfully (although perhaps unconventionally) treating cancer…..several of them, as she explains, harrassed by “Big Pharma” which controls “Big Medicine” by controlling both medical research and education.
The amazing book, The China Study, by T. Colin Campbell, PhD (who has about 70 years of peer reviewed research behind him) writes extensive reports of the effects of diet on health. I see this book referenced in many others and sometimes I see it attacked by “standard medicine and “Big Pharma” advocates which is a common tactic of these industries who must sustain their profit margins. In Campbell’s book, however, I found the final several chapters most intriguing–especially the one entitled, “Big Medicine: Whose Health are They Protecting?” (No wonder they want to discredit him.) He writes (p 321) “When is the last time that you went to the doctor and he or she told you what to eat or what not to eat? You’ve probably never had that experience. But the vast majority of Americans will fall prey to one of the chronic diseases of affluence discussed in Part II (of the book), and, as you have seen, there is a wealth of published research that suggests these diseases are a result of poor nutrition, not poor genes or bad luck. So why doesn’t the medical system take nutrition seriously? (new paragraph) Four words: money, ego, power and control……” The diseases he refers to include cancer, heart disease, and diabetes and Campbell’s research shows these to be reversible with nutrition and lifestyle changes.
Campbell then discusses the efforts of a few eminent medical doctors who have tried to buck the system. One, Dr. Esselstyn, who has a flawless resume. A renowned surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic, Esselstyn realized that most cancer surgery was “getting there after the horse had left the barn”(p 323). Dr Esselstyn began studying literature on the diseases he commonly treated…… He read scientific literature that compared international disease rates and lifestyle choices….He came to the realization that the diseases that so often plagued his patients were due to a diet rich in meat, fat and highly refined foods…..Esselstyn has become a champion of dietary treatment of disease and he has the data to prove his case. But it hasn’t been easy.” He tried to change the treatment protocols of the Cleveland Clinic but was basically made fun of and called “Dr. Sprouts” behind his back. This chapter in The China Study is an amazing few pages that makes the reader a “fly on the wall” in seeing the indoctrination of modern physicians and the basis for their resistence to actually “stopping disease” so it doesn’t have to be treated with pills and procedures which is ALL modern medicine has to offer according to Esselstyn (p 327). I think it worth noting that some of Dr. Esselstyn’s colleagues who didn’t support implementing the nutritional protocols he suggested for the Clinic did come to him for such information when they had health issues themselves.
Dr. David Servan-Schreiber, MD, PhD, and a ‘survivor’ of two brain tumors has written, Anticancer, A New Way of Living. This doctor is obviously struggling with his own unbelief in God and human relationship issues which he readily shares. He also appears unable to fully come out from under his classical medical training which offers only “pills and procedures” as he continues to nod to them and to, thereby, guard himself from colleague distain; however, it would seem that his own survival forced him to embrace nutrition and “God-made” supplements like garlic and tumeric (curcumin). This is a book to be read through a filter of faith and after one has read books more fearless in looking at the limits of pills and procedures in stopping disease. However, light shines on p 127 when Servan-Schreiber says, “For the last five thousand years, all great medical traditions have used diet to influence the course of disease. Ours is no exception. In the fifth century BC, Hippocrates said, “Let food be thy medicine and thy medicine be food.” In 2003 Nature published a long article that concluded–in more modern style–“Chemoprevention by edible phytochemicals is now considered to be an inexpensive, readily applicable, acceptable and accessible approach to cancer control and management.” But “modern medicine” has ignored Nature‘s wisdom–both the article and the reality.
Servan-Schreiber shares, “When I went back to see my oncologist after the second operation that followed the relapse in my brain tumor, I was getting ready to start a year of chemotherapy. I asked him if I ought to change my diet to make the most of the treatment and avoid another relapse. In spite of the devotion he had shown in looking after me, despite his patience and kindness fostered by years of dealing with distraught patients, his answer was perfectly stereotypical: ‘Eat what you like. It won’t make much difference. But whatever you do, keep up your weight’.” Servan-Schreiber then “looked at oncology textbooks that serve as the foundation for many of my colleagues’ training”. He found, “….there is not a single chapter on the role of nutrition in the treatment of cancer or the prevention of a relapse.” (p 127) This reseacher/physician goes on to share his own findings on a number of very helpful non-pharmaceutical foods and nutritional entities that he shows do, indeed, aid in both preventing and eliminating cancer. Among these are berries, curcumin (tumeric), garlic, green tea, peaches, and numerous other foods, herbs and spices. This doctor, as a patient, found truth–God made the REAL medicine that can stop disease from occurring and support our “wonderfully made” immune systems.
Dr. F. Batmangelidj, MD, in his book, Water for health, for Healing, for Life, (p 4,5) shares, “The sick-care system survives and thrives when people are continuously sick. This is exactly what is going on now.” He continues, “Mainstream medicine and its fund-raising sidekicks will not of their own accord abandon pharmaceutical medicine. Why? They do not want to allow natural solutions to the health pfoblems of society to get clearance and reach the public.” This extraordinary doctor’s work is cited in our post on “Water for Health” but I urge you to read the book so that you will gain an understanding into why he says, “Manifestations of drought in the body have been assumed to be indicators of this or that disease condition. Based on this ignorance, and protected and coddled by the pharmaceutical industry, mainstream medicine has labeled the different complications of deydration as various “diseases.” On the basis of this erroneous assumption, the trusting American public has to pay every-increasing health-care costs with their health and hard-earned money.” (p 5) In other words, this doctor seems to say that an industry that “sells pills” can feed their “cash cow” by “inventing chronic diseases”. Others agree.
Shane Ellison, MS, www.thepeopleschemist.com , wrote, Over-the-counter Natural Cures. This no nonsense former pharmaceutical chemist minces no words–put your seat belt on and read this book. I can only fault it in having a little “colorful” language, being too lenient on meat and alcohol (which have no place in health and healing), and no index. If it had an index it would cost twice as much and be worth that. It is a reference book every single family should own IF they seek health and wellness. I only wish Ellison realized how much “faith in God’s creation” he really has. At any rate, he teaches, at layman’s level, the chemistry we must have and calls it “nutrient logic”. On page ix (Introduction), he shares, “My studies and experience confirmed what I always knew: proper nutrient intake is the biggest determinant of overall health, longevity, and athletic performance.
Nutrient logic has been saving lives throughout history (p ix). He continues (p xi), “I abandoned my career as a drug-design chemist because I grew so disbusted with Big Pharma’s blatant willingness to ignore nutrient logic as a viable and inexpensive alternative to drugs…….the big problem is that nutrient logic isn’t profitable for big pharmaceutical companies. I’ve witnessed Big Pharma investigate and prove the value of these nutrients using state-of-the-art technology. But rather than offer this information to the masses, pharmaceutical companies cover it up and ry to mimic these substances and their actions with synthetic and often expensive drugs. Historically, these copanies often fail to create drugs as powerful, safe, and effecive as their natural counterparts.”
Is is not, then, shown again and again that, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” (Hosea 4:5a KJV)
This article begins our quest to “take charge of our own health”, as Dr. Andrew Weil MD said. As one who has gone from “spots on liver and lungs and changes in head of pancreas” following two pancreatic cancer surgeries to, within a few months, “no evidence of residual or recurrent disease” by following a careful nutritional and, certainly equally important, prayer and exercise program, I believe we are, in fact, “wonderfully made” to heal and this blog exists to share information and resources for working with rather than against our own immune and healing systems.
